Oil and Gas Project Financing

For both USA and International Projects – Upstream, Midstream, Downstream and Natural Gas

For $1MM (USD) to $5 Billion (USD) and Larger Oil and Gas Funding Requests

The network we have developed over the last 26 years is comprised of many Funders.

Oil and Gas Project Financing: Oil and gas projects are capital-intensive, with large up-front costs for drilling, production facilities, pipelines and processing long before full revenue is reached. Commercial Funding International, LLC ("CFI") helps operators, developers and owners connect with lenders to fund oil and gas development, acquisitions, pipelines and natural gas projects through our network of Funders.

At a Glance:

  • Funding Amounts: $1MM to $5 Billion (USD) and larger; preference for $10MM and larger; $10MM minimum for projects outside the USA.
  • Geographic Area: USA and USA-friendly countries worldwide.
  • Project Types: Development drilling, acquisitions of producing assets, pipelines and gathering systems, processing and storage, refining and natural gas projects.
  • Typical Terms: 7.5% to 10%+ interest; 20 to 30 year amortization.
  • Leverage: Up to 75% senior debt; up to 90% combined with equity from our network.
  • Final Terms: Determined by project, loan amount and findings during formal underwriting.

Oil and Gas Projects We Can Consider:

  • Development and Production: Drilling and completing wells on proven reserves, and enhancing production on existing fields.
  • Acquisitions: Purchase of producing properties and operating companies.
  • Exploration: Exploration-stage projects are more challenging and are considered case-by-case, usually alongside equity or with proven reserves nearby.
  • Pipelines and Gathering Systems: Midstream infrastructure that moves oil, gas and liquids to market.
  • Processing, Storage and Refining: Gas processing plants, storage terminals and downstream facilities.
  • Equipment: Rigs, compression and other production equipment.

Natural Gas Project Finance:

Natural gas projects, from gathering and processing to pipelines, storage and gas-fired power, are often supported by long-term transportation, supply or offtake contracts. Those contracts give our Funders a clear view of future cash flow, which is the foundation of project finance. If your natural gas project has, or is negotiating, contracts with creditworthy counterparties, please include them in your Executive Overview.

Types of Capital Available:

  • Reserve-Based and Asset-Based Loans: Debt secured by proven reserves, equipment and other hard assets. See Asset-Based Loans.
  • Project Finance: Long-term debt sized to the cash flow from future operations and offtake contracts.
  • Bridge Loans: Short-term capital to close an acquisition or bridge to permanent financing. See Bridge Loans.
  • Mezzanine Financing: Subordinate capital to fill the gap between senior debt and sponsor equity.
  • Joint Venture Equity: Equity partners from our network. See Joint Ventures.

What Our Funders Look For:

  • Reserves and Engineering: Independent reserve reports or engineering studies supporting the project.
  • Offtake and Contracts: Sales, transportation or offtake agreements. Our Funders can also factor in the NOI forecast of a pre-revenue project.
  • Permits and Title: Leases, rights-of-way, permits and clear title.
  • Budget and Schedule: A detailed total project cost and development timeline.
  • Sponsor Strength: Operating track record, management team and equity contribution.

Whether it be an early-stage or an advanced project, the project needs to make sense. Our goal is to structure a deal that makes sense for everyone. To learn more, see Mining Project Financing, Commercial Loans and International.
